WGI's popular Power Regionals will evolve this year to address issues in the current economic climate. In addition to previously announced Power Regionals in Dallas, Indianapolis, San Bernardino, South Brunswick and Tampa, seven more Power Regionals have added to the WGI contest calendar. "WGI had to find a way to bring more services to color guards at our events closer to home," said Chief Executive Officer Ron Nankervis. "We think that this offers a good solution to bring more national judging opportunities without the groups having to incur higher travel costs."
The addition of these events will also allow for more access of performing groups to interact with judges in critiques before going to World Championships. Another aspect of this decision was that, due to increasing arena costs, Power Regionals will be held in high school gymnasiums. In the 2008 season, arena costs rose as much as 25% putting the future of these contests in jeopardy.
Winter Guard International will offer 26 color guard regional contests in 2009 beginning February 7 and culminating in the WGI Color Guard World Championships to be held April 2-4 in Dayton, Ohio.
