Performing with both the Concert and Marching World class Ayala percussion ensembles, Tyler Houck and Joy Liu have amazing talent. The pair, featured on the cover of the 2009 Concert World Championships DVD, find the time and energy to offer their talent to both of their high school’s ensembles.
Houck and Liu began their percussion careers in the eighth grade. Although both students currently live in Chino Hills, CA, Liu was born in Taiwan. She moved to the US in 2004, eventually becoming a part of the Ayala percussion program in 2006.
Ayala’s 2009 concert production may have been challenging, but the tight-knit ensemble was a great support system and source of motivation. Houck recalled, “As encouragement and help came from the rest of the ensemble, I chose to commit a lot of time outside of rehearsal to learning and perfecting the music.”
The extra work and attention to detail from all members paid off as the ensemble captured the gold medal at WGI Championships. “We came through the tough times after many bonding times,” Liu commented. “We've learned to fulfill our dreams and goals together as a strong unit.”
Both Liu and Houck plan to return for the 2010 season. Their unforgettable 2009 Championship performance will undoubtedly set them up for greatness to come. “It was the reason why hours of time were invested and memories were shared - the life changing moment,” Liu concluded, “It was the best way to end a wonderful season.”
