This season, members of Z Winter Guard are using their 2010 program, “We Miss You,” to spread their message of hope against and prevention of domestic violence. Inspired by the loss of one of the guard’s beloved volunteers and parents who was killed this past Mother’s Day, the show is a tribute to Christy Grice, whose daughter, Stephanie Davis is in her second year with the ensemble, said Bill Burroway, Z Winter Guard director.

Choreographed to “Hands,” by Jewel, the program opens to an emotional dance sequence with the guard poised on a large purple awareness ribbon, which spans the entire width of the black performance floor. Silks in shades of violet and white are introduced along with sabres and air blades.

“The winter guard community has focused on social issues in the past but for us, this really hit home. A domestic violence prevention theme is the best way we could honor Christy and raise awareness of this issue,” concluded Burroway.

A freshman at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, Stephanie appreciates the support of the Z Winter Guard family. She says the time spent with her friends in rehearsal helps keep her from dwelling on the loss of her mother. Stephanie and her fellow guard members hope the program will help promote domestic violence awareness and prevention.

Z Winter Guard is a member of the Ohio Indoor Performance Association and will perform at the WGI Nashville and Dayton Regional competitions as an Independent Regional A guard. The ensemble was a 2009 IRA champion, receiving the Gold Medal at the Mid East Performance Association Championships performing under the name Ability Winter Guard.
