On Saturday, March 6, 2010, Michael Krop High School served as the stage for South Florida to put their best foot forward and show the WGI Community just what they have in store! Some of big players from all over the state made their way to “The Bottom” (nickname for South Florida) to place themselves at the top of their class. You could just feel the competitive tension in the audience as each guard pretty much ran back into the gym to watch the next competitor. Here’s how it played out in South Florida!

Scholastic A Class

1st Place 86.30- West Broward High School (Pembroke Pines, FL) performed their program “Get Me Out of Here.” This group set themselves apart from any group in this class; from their innovative opening movement to their moving rifle phrase. They were clearly the paradigm of the Scholastic A class at this regional. The performers were dedicated to the program from beginning to end!

2nd Place 84.30 – Coral Glades High School (Coral Springs, FL) performed their program “Broken Voices.” This was the group stood out as one of the strongest weapon lines in this class, whatever went in the air came down solid in the performer’s hand. Their constant use of their floor during all the drill movements to the energy-filled ending pink flag moment was surely a crowd pleaser.

3rd Place 83.80 Cypress Creek High School (Orlando, FL) performed their program “Everytime We Say Goodbye” The Performers of Cypress Creek displayed their expressive equipment work throughout the program.

4th Place 83.20 Timber Creek High School (Orlando, FL) performed their program “Music”. The show had voiceovers that talked about music and sound, and how it related to every day life in general. The highlight of the show was their unforgettable and joyful ending flag moment.

5th Place 82.10 Cypress Bay High School (Weston, FL) performed their program “Still Standing.” All can be said about these young ladies and their skills on sabre is WOW! One would think they must be in sabre block all day long at rehearsal. Their show was inspired by the Burlesque era. Everyone in the audience, including myself, was enthralled with these sassy seductress from Cypress Bay who took over the minds of anyone watching them. From the uniforms to the soundtrack, Cypress Bay will be remembered for years to come! The blonde soloist was clearly the star of the show!

6th Place 77.50 – Seminole Ridge High School (Palm Beach, FL) performed their program “Are We There Yet” The show and the performers displayed strong weapon skills. The young ladies achieved numerous rifle tricks, but the highlight to the show was their ending flag with shades of green.

7th Place 75.50 – Countryside High School (Clearwater, FL) performed their program “Mopomatic” As the first group on for the night, they kept the crowd pleased with the show

Independent A Class

1st Place- 83.30 MEDEA (Palm Beach, FL)
performed their program “Through the Window at Midnight.” This guard was the definition of grace and class. Watching Medea was a true breath of fresh air. From their use of the Hunter’s Moon on the flag to their soft but intriguing sabre book, I see nothing but great success for this group. The guy dancer soloist adds to their beautiful silhouette.

2nd Place 82.20 Fahrenheit (Orlando, FL) performed their program “Winter Kills” while wearing all green to portray the frozen dew on a morning leaf during the winter time. Great sabre exchange toss feature. Their ending flag moment was such a great highlight of the night!

3rd Place 75.20 Phoenix Independent (Sylvania, OH) performed their program “Just a Thought”. Traveling to Florida from Ohio, this group wanted to join in the warm fun of the color guard playground. A great group in this class that understood the importance of the length of a phrase!

Scholastic OPEN

1st place 78.00 Santaluces High School (Lantana, FL) performed their program “Two Steps Away” All I can about this unit was WOW, these young ladies performed to the music of Patti Labelle! A true crowd pleaser, the ladies of Santaluces took the audience on a ride through their flag feature on their necks, to their beautiful ending flag feature. Great success awaits Santaluces in Dayton.

2nd Place 75.70 Kell High School (Marietta, GA) performed their program “Forme’” This group used body and equipment work to display different forms and shapes throughout the show. The floor with spiral graph and curved flag added to the thought of dynamics & forms.

3rd Place 73.70 Stoneman Douglas High School (Parkland, FL) performed their program “Glance at A Legacy”. Truly a standout group in this class, the ladies of Douglas made everyone pay attention to them. From their solid catches on any pieces of equipment they tossed, to the beige flag feature that was an added delight.

4th Place 69.50 Spanish River High School (Boca Raton, FL) performed the program “Grow.” The ladies all dressed is yellow like daffodils in a park of flowers. The ending pink flag section was the highlight of the show!

Independent OPEN

1st Place 79.90 USF Winterguard (Tampa, FL) performed their program “Le Mort Rouge.” Performing on a bloodlike floor, they opened the show with a great movement moment! Their all rifle section and the sabre exchange added such a great layer to their show.

2nd Place 78.80 FIU Performance Ensemble (Miami, FL) was a standout unit in open class while performing their program “I Do It for Me.” This unit made their debut in open class with a big bang! The opening movement section to the all rifle section made it hard to keep your eyes off them. The new spelling of FUN is FIU! Love them from beginning to end!

It was time For the World Class to take the stage, and the Gym was packed from top to bottom.

Scholastic WORLD

1st Place- 84.80 Flanagan High School (Pembroke Pines, FL) performing their program “Atlas Shrugged” Last years’ Bronze medalist brings the Ayn Rands master work to the WGI Arena. You can be assured this is one of Flanagan’s strongest years on equipment excellence. Dedication and hard work is quite evident from begging to end of their program, but that’s any year from this group. Once again it’s their all flag moment that captivates the audience, but this year they take it one step further by executing a mirroring flag feature. The floor is divided in half, both sides are doing the same feature, but one is done on the left hand while the other side on the right hand, a true world class moment to watch for.

2nd Place 76.90 Freedom High School (Orlando, FL) performing their program “In The Moment” With their second year in the world class, this group displayed a strong equipment work as well as beautiful flag moments. But it was the ending Silver Flag moment that took the evening. Good Luck in Dayton!

Independent World

1st Place 87.10 Northeast Independent (Jacksonville, FL) performed their program “Ruthless Gravity.” Once again NEI came to play and leave no stone unturned! From the first note of the music, they had the audience intertwined into their show, from their death defying rifle to various sabre tricks, Northeast was out to prove a point, and it was heard load and clear! This program adds to the years how we have come to love Northeast and their skills of dance and spinning. Keep your eye out for all the tricks that would make anyone in the audience say “WOW, How did they do that” All we can say is “Gravity” is Northeast Independent’s best friend! Can’t wait to see them again in Dayton!

2nd Place 85.00 Braddock Independent (Miami, Fl) performed their program “The Passion.” All that you’ve heard about Braddock being Phenomenal is an understatement! The young ladies, you can’t keep your eyes off of, and the young men are just as striking. The show contains an incredible never ending ripple rifle section that seems to go on forever that has the audience going wild. They dance and spin better than any Braddock you’ve ever seen before, this is definitely a year you don’t want to miss them perform.

3rd Place 80.60 Premonition (Ft Lauderdale, FL) performed their program “Obsessed.” This show was about various obsessive compulsive disorders, and it quite evident throughout the program. The performers are full energy from the start to finish. The highlight is the all flag on the moves that seems to never let down.

4th Place 78.40 Fahrenheit (Orlando, FL) performed their program “P.S. I Love You.” With voiceovers from the movie of the same titly, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the gym. This group held on to the concept, and portrayed it as if you were watching the movie live. The music was cover of Unchained Melody, which had another level of emotions as you think of the movie “Ghost”, but it was the ending flag that sealed the deal for the group!
