COLOR GUARD COACH

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: As an assistant to the high school Band Director, the Color Guard Coach is responsible for the planning and instruction of the school marching band’s auxiliary unit, the Color Guard. In addition, this position requires planning and direction of the Winter Guard program. The instructor prepares and directs the unit for independent performance and competition, as well as for performances integrated within the larger marching band.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: The Color Guard Coach will:

Instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and weapon techniques.

Work closely with the Marching Band Director and the other staff members to develop a visual program, including flag, uniform, and prop design.

Design and teach color guard routines (choreography) that effectively complement and enhance the visual and musical program, as well as fit each guard member’s ability level.

Ensure the highest possible performance from Color Guard members through proper warm-ups, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.

Supervise Color Guard students, including travel, during games and competitions. Will not leave students unsupervised.

Teaches precautions and procedures to help students prevent injuries. Promptly documents all injuries.

Participate in Fall/Winter/Spring Semester program (i.e., Winter Guard/Recruiting/Performances) planning and instruction as needed.

Manage all necessary equipment, including maintenance, repairs, and acquisition recommendations, to ensure the color guard is properly equipped for all rehearsals and performances.

Attend all rehearsals and performances agreed upon.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

-High School Diploma
-Background in marching band auxiliary performance.
-Experience in the various subgroups of the guard unit (e.g., flags, rifles, sabers, dance, etc.).
