Position Title: Color Guard Instructor

About Us:
The Long Island University Marching Band is an NCAA Division I college marching band that inspires audiences with spirited performers who are devoted to excellence in all they do.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Color Guard Instructor to join our team. The Color Guard Instructor will play a crucial role in the development and success of our marching band’s visual performance. This individual will work closely with the Director of Bands and other staff members to design, choreograph, and teach visually stunning routines that enhance our musical performances.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement comprehensive color guard routines that complement the marching band’s repertoire.

2. Choreograph visually captivating movements and sequences that align with the musical themes and dynamics.

3. Provide instruction and guidance to color guard members on technique, timing, performance quality, and presentation.

4. Conduct regular rehearsals and workshops to refine skills and prepare for performances.

5. Collaborate with the Director of Bands and other staff members to ensure seamless integration of color guard routines with musical arrangements.

6. Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes teamwork, creativity, and personal growth.

7. Attend rehearsals, performances, and other band events as required.

8. Coordinate LIU Color Guard Clinics that encourage strong relationships with high school recruits. These clinics will also serve for fundraisers for the band.

9. Long term goal: Establish a competitive winter guard at Long Island University.

Qualifications:
1. Proven experience as a color guard instructor or performer, preferably in a collegiate, competitive marching band, or drum corps setting.

2. Strong background in dance, flag spinning, weappon handling, and other color guard techniques.

3. Excellent choreography skills with the ability to create original routines that showcase the strengths of the ensemble.

4. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to instruct and motivate color guard members of varying skill levels.

5. Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate the needs and preferences of the marching band program.

6. Passion for the performing arts and a commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in music, dance, performing arts, or related field.

2. Previous experience with designing and implementing themed halftime shows or field productions.

3. Familiarity with traditional and contemporary color guard equipment and techniques.

4. Experience working with diverse student populations and promoting equity and inclusion in the arts.
