COLOR GUARD ADVISOR

The Louisiana Tech Department of Bands is seeking a Color Guard advisor for the 2022-23 season, beginning immediately with recruiting, training sessions, and auditions. Candidates for the position must have previous experience in teaching Color Guard and in successfully building a full program including experience with flag, weapons, and design.

DUTIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

Work collaboratively with the director(s) to coordinate all aspects of the Fall marching activities.

Prepare warm-up routines/practice exercises relative to the requisite skills required by the members.

Recruit potential members on and off campus.

Coordinating 2-3 summer sessions on campus and through Zoom for members during the months of June-August.

Direct 1-2 full day precamp sessions prior to regular camp.

Attend regular camp of the Marching Band (August 30-September 6, 2022).

Choreograph and teach appropriate routines for the Color Guard both as an integrated and an independent unit of the marching band.

Regularly attend practice sessions of the full marching band (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 4:00-6:00 PM).

Direct weekly Wednesday sectionals as needed throughout the marching season.

Attend all home games, game day practices, any away games, and other activities of the marching band.

Instruct weekly or bi-weekly Color Guard sessions during the Winter and Spring semesters.

Schedule separate competition events as the unit transitions its status from an attachment of the marching band to an independent competition entity (e.g., “Winter Guard”) during the winter season.

Other related duties, as assigned, to assist the Band Director prepare the Color Guard for public appearances.

QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

Background in marching band auxiliary performance.

Experience in teaching the skills of the various subgroups of the color guard unit (e.g. flags, rifle, sabre).

Understanding of the principles of student growth, development, and learning, and of how to promote a positive co-curricular program.

Determination to develop the best possible educational and co-curricular programs for all students. Willingness to embrace diversity.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Must possess effective leadership techniques and skills.

Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with directors, students, administrators, alumni, athletic department, and parents.

Ability to averts problem situations and willingness to intervene to resolve conflicts.

Exercises self-control and perseverance when dealing with students.

Complies with all applicable health requirements.

Complies with drug-free workplace rules and university policies.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience in a drum corps or spirit organization.

Previous experience in instruction/adjudication of a drum corps or spirit organization.

Experience in creating and choreographing routines for the color guard and subgroups.

Experience in beginning, organizing, and fostering a winter guard program

Salary commensurate with experience.
