Job Summary
The Marching Band Drumline Instructor is a part-time, stipend, extra-duty position for the Fall semester, with the possibility of extension into the Spring semester for the Percussion Theater/Winter program. As an assistant to the Newark Memorial High School Band Director, the Drumline Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching, and managing all aspects of the marching band’s battery percussion section (drumline), and supporting the overall success of the music program.
The instructor prepares the drumline for integrated performances with the marching band (field shows, parades, and stands), as well as for independent performances and competitions. The role also includes coordinating percussion theater programming during the Spring semester, if applicable.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and teach drumline programs that complement and enhance the visual and musical aspects of the marching band’s performances.
- Evaluate members’ skills and assign parts and equipment appropriately.
- Instruct students in fundamental and advanced percussion techniques, choreography, and performance routines (field shows, parades, stand tunes, and cadences).
- Arrange or compose cadences, exercises, pep tunes, and show music for the drumline as needed.
- Collaborate with the Band Director and staff to develop rehearsal plans and performance concepts.
- Coordinate the drumline rehearsal schedule with the full marching band and conduct additional sectional rehearsals as needed.
- Ensure the highest level of performance from the drumline through proper warm-ups, preparation, and individualized attention.
- Recruit and retain students for the drumline and foster a positive, inclusive team environment.
- Ensure the drumline is properly equipped and maintain all equipment in good condition; report maintenance and repair needs; recommend new equipment purchases within budget.
- Maintain a cooperative and professional relationship with all stakeholders, including the Band Director, Color Guard Director, Athletic Director, other staff, students, parents, boosters, school administration, and custodial staff.
- Establish and maintain communication with parents of drumline members and help organize their support for performances and events.
- Attend and actively participate in all rehearsals, band camp, performances, competitions, and public appearances as scheduled.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Band Director to support the band program.
- Optional: Assist with spring semester program planning as needed.
- Optional: Help create and lead the drumline for the Winter Percussion/Indoor Drumline program, including scheduling rehearsals and competitions, designing shows, and coordinating parent support.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in music or education preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in marching percussion performance, including snare, tenor (quads/quints), bass drum, and cymbal techniques.
- Experience composing and arranging drumline parts, cadences, pep tunes, and/or show music preferred.
- Experience working with school-aged students, preferably at the high school level.
- Prior experience as a performer, instructor, or adjudicator in drum corps, university marching band, or other competitive marching organizations preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and parents, and to foster a positive and disciplined learning environment.
- Must submit Live Scan to NUSD, including finger printing and negative TB test, and any other information as required.
- Must be available for Band Camp, all rehearsals, and all performances during the Fall semester, with possible extension into Spring.
Compensation
Stipend commensurate with experience, based on Newark Unified School District policy.

Immediate supervisor: Newark Memorial High School Band Director.
